“What do you mean, it isn’t there?” she asked incredulously. “There were so many of them yesterday!”
“I’m sorry ma’am,” came the tired response. She was the fifth person to ask the same question. That was after all ten of their inventory had already been bought, wrapped, and taken away. “There is a reason why the ad said, ‘While supplies last’.”
“They damn well should have lasted longer than your first hour of being open!”
The kid at customer service took a deep breath. She was old enough to work there, but too young to grasp the importance that one thing can be in a person’s life.
“I think that the store brand model is still in stock. I can go get one…”
“Do I look like I want the cheap knock off version?” the woman interrupted. “I have standards, and your company’s version is not up to snuff.” At 48, she stood at the counter. Dressed well, but not so flamboyantly, her purse, designer, was worn at the rivets. Not bad, but enough to show she was still trying to look in her prime, but not succeeding.
“Ma’am, I don’t know what to say, I checked the database, and there are none, on any shelf, within 100 miles of here.”
The woman looked at him shrewdly, “What about 200 miles? I would drive that far if you can get them to hold it for me.”
“Umm,” the kid closed her eyes and hoped she would never have to feel that desperate in her life. She turned back to the computer screen and typed a few keys.
“Yeah, well, I found one in the next state over, about 210 miles away?”
“Sold! Save it!” the woman was excitedly grabbing her purse and running for the door. The kid at the counter could swear she hear the tires squealing as the woman peeled out of the parking lot, on the way to the highway.
The next customer came up to the counter, another woman. Likely with the same question and complaint. She rolled her eyes in disbelief over the lengths one goes to find One Good Man™
