“What the hell is this?” Louise yelled as she entered the room.
It was supposed to be her Special Day, but this abomination was not helping it come true. The yellow and blue flowers were ok, but silver sprinkles?
“Dear,” replied David, hoping to calm her down, “we discussed this, and you were very specific in what you wanted for a theme.”
He waved to the staff, who hurried over with another glass of champagne. The Tanqueray martini was the bartender’s idea. He had been through enough of these to know how to help diffuse the situation. Shortly after, a tray of appetizers followed.
The room was decorated fabulously. The centerpieces, elevated on silver columns to allow free conversation across the table, were topped with the most beautiful collection of blue anemone and cornflowers, surrounding the nearly golden hue of the yellow roses and snapdragon. It was Louise’s idea to elevate the centerpieces. She was more utilitarian-oriented. David was the artistic influence in the couple. Which is why he was put in charge of the decorations.
The DJ< seeing the guests find the argument more intriguing than the food, started to mix in some more upbeat music. He was obligated to remove the usual party classics. The YMCA, the Chicken Dance. The Macarena as well. Barbie Girl was added to annoy his family’s idea of proper music.
Louise took a deep breath. She had said what she wanted for a theme, and she had told him to handle it.
“I know that, and I know I wanted to be surprised, but I didn’t want to be shocked.”
Gesturing to the cake, she continued, “This reminds me of going to a hibachi place.”
Sitting on it’s own table, surrounded by lights to bring focus to it, was The Cake.
Triple layered, frosted with blue and gold frosting, the top covered in silver sprinkles like that of an ice cream cone.
A ring cake. Three tiers of bundt cake confectionery perfection.
David, with the fading hope that someday she will look back and laugh this off, “You said that you wanted the wedding ring to be the center point of the theme. I thought that a ring cake would be the perfect symbolism?”
